Mercury Marine Announces Bold New Vision with its Avator Electric Outbaord Concept

Mercury Marine has announced its Avator™️ electric outboard concept, representingMercury’s next step in marine innovation, advanced technology and engineering.

The electric outboard concept will be on display for the first time during the 2022 Miami International Boat Show and is progressing the company toward the formal release of electric outboard products later in 2022 and 2023.

Avator creates a new boating experience for Mercury’s global customers combining an investment in electrification with more than 80 years of expertise in the marine industry. Leveraging Mercury’s leadership and reputation for hydrodynamics, corrosion resistance, reliability, and industrial design, the Avator concept will deliver a superior user experience for a wide range of vessels and activities.

“We are excited to formally announce this bold new phase of our vision for the future that only Mercury Marine can deliver,” said Chris Drees, Mercury Marine president. “Electrification is strategically important to us, and this concept provides a first look at how we intend to deliver on our commitment to being the industry leader in both internal combustion products and electric propulsion. We are taking efficiency to a new level, opening up new ways to enjoy the boating experience.”

Avator advances Mercury’s commitment to sustainability by offering the prospect of boating with zero direct emissions. Mercury is also using electrification to make boating more accessible with features such as swappable batteries and enhanced portability.

“Mercury has the industry’s strongest and most robust technology and design teams who are shaping a new power for marine that expands the brand into new applications,” said Tim Reid, Mercury Marine vice president of product development and engineering.

“We believe features like easily changeable batteries and quiet operation hold great appeal for current and prospective boaters. We expect our breadth of electric offerings to expand over time, and we will continue to listen to consumer feedback and monitor adoption trends.”

“Our team is taking everything we know about how consumers use our products and incorporating it into Avator, creating an electric propulsion system that will set a new benchmark for the marine industry,” said Drees.

For those in Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific keen to get a look at the new concept, customers can expect updates in line with formal global releases. It’s expected that the Avator concept will be displayed in the region in 2022, with further updates coming soon.

Verados let the new Fury Dual Console truly shine

Fitted with twin 225 Mercury Verado outboards, the new Fury 282 Dual Console is better than ever – faster, better balanced and roomier.

“Having experienced the difference, the 225 Verados are now definitely our preferred motors on this boat,” said Fury Custom Boats owner/director, Scott Fury.

The Dual Console, which attracted plenty of attention at the recent Perth International Boat Show, is a brilliant multi-purpose machine – a bow-rider with a protected helm, a large fishing area and plenty of comfort with a bedroom, toilet, galley and BBQ if you want.

The addition of twin 225hp Mercury Verados have made a very attractive package even better.
“With the Verados, the boat sits perfectly in the water. The trim’s better so we get improved performance,” Scott said.

The boat, which tips the scales at about 3.8 tonnes, now also moves faster.

“Testing with the Verados we hit 46 knots (85 km/h) at 6,400 revs which is better than it’s ever done,” Scott said.

At 3,000 rpm the twin rig was using 40 litres an hour, giving the 9.10 metre Fury a range of 460 kilometres.

“The fuel economy was good and I’m sure it will get better as the engines settle in,” he said. Feedback from the boat’s owner has been similarly positive.

“He’s very happy,” Scott said. “The engines are quiet and smooth, they perform really well and he’s thrilled with all the extra room they provide in the fishing area.”

The new Generation 5 Verados are less complicated to rig so there’s more space between the engines and the transom. They are also narrower, allowing easier access through the transom door to the swim ladder.

Scott’s appreciation of the new engines extends into the cockpit.

“The boat has Simrad displays and the way the engine information is shown is impressive. I think the throttle arrangement is great as well, with one lever controlling both engines means driving the boat is that much easier,” he said.

“As I said, ultimately it’s up to the owner which engines are used but I’m going to be recommending the Verados certainly.”
